Abortion is a medical procedure to discontinue pregnancy. However, these days due to the availability of emergency pills like 72 Hours Pill and I-pill this has become a home procedure which is very dangerous. Females do not understand the complications that these emergency pills can bring. Any complications in the process can even come to a stage which can get a person at risk of developing infertility. Abortion should be done with advise of the gynecologist only. If you are not looking for pregnancy then proper contraceptive options like condoms should be used.
Its not abould today even in the past before PCPNDT act was inforce abortion used to happen to abort the female child. Due to this reason government introduced PNDT act to prevent illegal abortions and improve the sex ratio in India. Pregnancy upto 12 weeks can be aborted by the choice of the pregnant woman at any registered centre under the MTP Act.
Pregnancy of 12 weeks and more but less than 24 weeks can be aborted at special MTP Centres where 2 or more gynaecologists would certify the reasons for aborting the pregnancy. Pregnancy of more than 24 weeks cannot be aborted in India.
Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) or Abortion as it is more commonly known can be carried out through the use of medicines which can be prescribed only by a registered gynecologist in cases of early pregnancy. The use of medicine to discontinue the pregnancy is done till 8 weeks of pregnacy. After 8 weeks it is done through a minimally invasive surgical procedure called Dialation and Evacuation. In this procedure the patient is admitted in day care and the foetus is aborted using medicines. The gynaecologist then clears the uterus of any products of conception by dialating the cervix and using a curette to clear the uterus. The procedure is carried out under anesthesia and the patient is discharged from the hospital on the same day.
